| The Shaw 650 features a moderate aspect square top rig with a large roach and efficient jib plus masthead asym kite enabling planing starting in 10-12 knots downwind.
All class sails are designed by Lyttleton Sails, a specialist loft in New Zealand creating sail packages for performance skiffs and sportboats. Class main and jib are Kevlar and we offer the option of loadpath main and jib as standard. Refer to the news section for more information on sail shape and development.
The standard 52sqm masthead kite is suitable for all purposes. The higher wind/reaching kite is 40sqm and along with the number 2 jib option provides a way to reduce power and keep sailing in up to 30 knots or on tight reaching courses.
The C-Tech twin spreader no backstay rig uses tight forestay and locked in prebend with the tip bending away to support the masthead under kite while allowing the main to depower. The entire mast including spreaders is carbon.
Using carbon saves weight which improves pitching and heel, and the stiffness of the carbon rig means that the rig breathes better; depowering automatically in gusts while still remaining stiff enough to support the mast head kites.
The mast is deckstepped onto a bullet proof mastfoot with recessed stays; the prod and boom are also carbon.
At a total weight of less than 18kg for the full rig excluding sails, the boat is easy to rig up.
