Using a progressive set of one design rules, the Shaw 650 fleet is fairly unique among the sportboat scene allowing both home builds and fiberglass boats together.
Sailing in mixed fleet, PHRF can be referred to www.racetrack.org.nz which tracks actual performance in New Zealand’s sportboat fleet, giving a clear idea of how the Shaw performs relative to many of the other sportboat designs.
Under IRC, the Shaw rates around 1.08 but this depends on boat age, sails, weight and a variety of other factors; neither IRC nor SBR favour light weight sportboats. Under SBR, the Shaw has been rated previously around 0.988. All new boats will rate higher than these numbers, due to the shorter prod and older age of the Shaw 650 with these ratings.
In USA’s PHRF system, Manic has been rating around 96-99 on the East Coast, and we would suggest rating something similar to M24 or slightly faster than a Viper is about right.
In New Zealand’s NZSBA rule and PHRF each boat is rated separately, and generally they are sitting a little quicker than the Magic 25s and Thompson 650, and the quickest boats rate the same or higher than a T750. |
