Shaw 650 Stig's Audi Cousin Wins CYCA NSW State Championship 2014

10 / 02 / 2014

Racing in a full fleet of 16 boats including several Viper 640s, Shaw 650s and Thompsons plus the boats willing to travel (Raptor 8.5m, Stay Tuned Leech 6.5 etc) David Ellis continued his hot streak, winning the NSW State Championship 2014 held at CYCA in Sydney in dominant fashion, with a clean 5 win score sheet (racing was 6 races 1 discard).

Sailing a production Shaw 650, David Ellis has rapidly risen to the front of the East Coast Australian Sportsboat fleet, just as he did previously in his Audi Penfold Racing A31.  He was, however, pushed hard by Shaw 650 Barely Legal of Scott Kennedy, who ended up 3rd on countback with Zippier of Andrew Waugh (wo wo wo what is he good for) separating the two 650s in 2nd place.

Further proof of the fun and performance of the Shaw 650 - sailed over 6 windward leewards, the 2 leading Shaws were consistently sailing to their handicaps, quicker over the water by around 3-5 min per hour against the quicker Vipers, and 2-3 min quicker per hour than the Stay Tuned.  Star was a little slower, showing that new owner Chris Bland has the boat trucking in bigger breeze, but maybe leaving some more work to enjoy in the mid range stuff. On PHRF (performance handicap) the 3 Shaw 650s managed a trifecta, with 1st 2nd and 3rd all picked up by the Shaw 650s. Congratulations to all racers, and a big champagne toast/mass applause/group hug for the Mighty, the one and only, The Stig's Audi Cousin of David Ellis & crew!
